[[cont. from Princess Rain at the castle gates -thread]]
Rain trotted along the hallways of Dream Castle, looking around searchingly. She wouldn't have really minded meeting just about anyone familiar there. It was all beginning to be too quiet for her there. Where were everyone? Usually the castle was bustling with life. What had happened?
She realised something must have. She shuddered and swallowed, all thoughts of sneaking to her mother to scare her wiped away from her mind. She just wanted to talk to someone now, to find out what was going on.
"Hello?" she shouted. "Mom? Dad? Suncatcher? Everybody?"

Just then, a paleish purple unicorn with shiny aqua hair with aqua tinsel in it entered the castle. She was about to head up to her room when she heard someone call out. The unicorn stopped in her tracks as she tried to trace the voice. She decided not to worry and she headed towards her room....
As she was walking down the hallways, she was looking around her, and saw Rain. She realized that that was who called out. Princess Sparkle stood there. "What's wrong, Rain?" Asked Sparkle. "I heard you shout as I entered the castle."

Rain stopped on her tracks when she heard Sparkle's voice from behind her. She wrinkled her nose so that the other Princess couldn't see it. If there was a pony on this earth that she really disliked, it was Sparkle. She knew she could get a little full of being a Princess herself, but Sparkle had always taken it too far. With an inner sigh, she plastered a smile on her face, and turned politely to meet Sparkle.
"I'm just looking for mother, Sparkle," she said. "It's so awfully quiet here. I am worried." She figured she might as well ask if Sparkle knew what was going on. "Do you know what's happened?"

The unicorn blinked a couple of times. "Well, I don't really know where your mother is." Said Sparkle. "But Rain, have you looked everywhere in Dream Valley?" Asked the mare. She actually stopped to think for a moment there of where Rain's mother went. Wouldn't she be in the castle? Princess Sparkle looked at the other princess. "Well, I do hope you find your mother." Said Sparkle, and she left to go into her room.

Suncatcher walked down the hall then, huffing slightly from her run. She was so busy thinking about the mess that they were in that she almost ran into Rain. "Ack." Her head snapped up, then she rolled her eyes at her own reaction. "Rain. Rainbows, girl, you picked a bad time to come home." She gestured, telling Rain to follow her as she walked down the hall to the Royal Suite.
Suncatcher decided to keep it succint. "Someone stole the locket. Mother's a wreck."

Rain was happy to see Sparkle go. She wouldn't be of any help to her anyway. She was too busy looking after the unicorn to notice her sister, and thus nearly let him bump on her. She stepped back, first alarmed but then happy to see her. She wrinkled her nose on Suncatcher calling her "girl", though, as she started to walk with her. She preferred to think of herself as an adult already. Goodness, she had brought home a stallion, hadn't she?
But the news of the locket blew all that right out of her mind. Her jaw dropped.
"Stole the locket?" she asked, aghast at such news. "How did that happen? Wasn't it supposed to be all safe and sound?"

"It was," Suncatcher said grimly. "But someone got in here anyhow. Kail is taking care of it--from my understanding, it was taken by pirates. She's arranged with another group to go haring off after the theives. I don't think we'd be welcome tagging along, though ponyfeathers! I want to. It's so hard to sit here and wait. Responsibilty is a bother." She shot Rain an envious look. If only she hadn't been born first...
But nevermind that. She wouldn't even have the relative freedoms of being a Princess much longer. That was obvious.
Suncatcher opened the door to her suite, and flopped down on a nearby couch with a heavy sigh. "Not sure what else I can tell you, besides that. We're all a tad underinformed at the moment. What have you been up to? Mother had her tail in a twist over you, and I had to hear all about it."

Rain listened to her sister, still dumbfounded by the news. Pirates? Here? In borin' ole Dream Valley?
Her mind was pushed onto a whole different track. Goodness! Pirates! That was so exciting! And Kail was going after them - with another group of pirates? Was that really what her sister had meant? That was so exciting! What an adventure! She must get along!
She was lost into her fancies for a moment so it took a while before she realised Suncatcher had asked her a question. She smiled to her sister, making a mental note to herself to attempt to stowaway into the pirate ship.
"Oh, I've had loads of fun!" she said, forgetting that they were talking about something serious. She recalled Skydancer again, and smiled mischievously. "And I've brought part of that fun with me, too." She whipped her tail about and took on a coy look. "His name is Skydancer."

"_His_ name?" Suncatcher's eyebrows arched upwards sharply. "This is just a...friend of yours, I hope?" 'Tail in a twist' would not even come close to mother's reaction if he was anything more. Ponyfeathers. Even she wasn't allowed to have romantic interests without there being considerable fuss and bother.

Rain smiled and giggled mischievously at Suncatcher's expression. She loved the thought of bringing home a stallion - quite the handsome stallion, besides. She imagined she might get married with him, and then she would be the first in the family to marry. Before her elder sister, even! The thought made her grin.
"Who knows..." she said nonchalantly. "I like him. He's my knight, you know." She tossed her tail and looked coy. "He's saved my life, and he is handsome. Terribly handsome. And I think he likes me too. Even if he never says so."

"Well." Suncatcher said, obviously somewhat at a loss. "I wouldn't mention it to mother right now...she's..." The older pony shook her head. "You always were something."

Rain's smile faded away at the mention of their mother. She looked down and away, and fluttered her wings a little uncomfortably.
"Mother's all right, isn't she?" she asked, a bit concerned now, looking at her sister again. "I mean, it's not like the Champs aren't going to just bring the locket back and everything will be all right again, won't it? I mean, they've beaten the Dark Rainbow, how hard can one little band of robbers be?"

"I think it's the principle of the thing. They came in here and took it right under our noses. Mom's also never had anything really bad happen while she's been Queen. There's a weight of responsibility now, that's so very diferent from when she was just helping in the war." Suncatcher frowned, thoughtfully. "She's a good Queen, just one better with day-to-day diplomacy than crisis. She's be okay, I guess. I'm sure the champions will bring the locket back--they _have_ to."

Rain nodded and tossed her tail about. She went up onto her wings and fluttered over to her sister, to hover about in the air, her better mood returning again. She cradled her hooves close to her body and looked at her with a careless smile.
"We should probably go with them to help," she said, then tossed a hoof. "Yeah, I know, I know, we're not welcome with them, but feather and flutters, this is partly our responsibility, isn't it? We're the princesses, and we should be there to help." Her eyes sparkled. "I'm sure we could sneak into the ship somehow. Skydancer would help."

Suncatcher shook her head sharply. "I couldn't. If mother doesn't bounce back right anyway, I'm the one who has to run things here." She sighed and looked at Rain, too tired to protest any further. "You really shouldn't take off with them. I don't think I could stop you though...none of us ever could..." There was no sense of adventure in this for the eldest Princess.
Kenaz would go in a heartbeat. Suncatcher wondered, dimly, if Rain would even think of asking her younger brother.
