Sunlight was standing in her garden, rooting out weeds, a hat on her rainbow locks, the sunlight sparkling on her pale coat like the ripples of water on a sunny day. She was getting old, but there was a touch of delicate innocence about her which could not be erased by time. From farther, she would have appeared a filly, and even upon closer inspection she did not look like the mare of her age. Upon guessing, many would have said she couldn't be a day over her thirties. This pleased her, and she always said that it was all because of her healthy diet, and then she recommended full vegetarian diet for others as well.
Her son needed little of such help for remaining young. He was sitting on the porch of Sunlight's cottage, drawing a starmap and doing some calculations. His brow was furrowed, and he appeared not so pleased. At times he glanced at his mother, a worried look in his eyes. He didn't like what the stars were telling him.
Eventually he got up and left the map lying on the porch. He walked down the stairs, and as the sun caught his rainbow mane, there was a shimmer and a sparkle, and for a moment it seemed like he had a soft halo about him. Then it was gone, and the pale blue unicorn walked to his mother, a gentle smile on his lips.
"You should rest, mother," he said as he reached his head down to pick up a weed between his teeth. He tore it up and tossed it on the little pile she had been gathering nearby.
Sunlight looked up, and smiled affectionately to her son.
"Dear, you worry too much for me," she said. "I am completely fine."
Her son drew back his ears a little, an anxious look passing through his eyes, and then he turned his head away.
"I..." he started, then stopped. He didn't know how to tell his mother of his suspicions. Of the way he had seen stars shift, and what they had told him. The bad omens. He sighed, and looked at his mother again, a faint smile on his lips. "All right, mother. Do you need anything? I was going to have a walk, I can bring back anything you think you'll need."
Sunlight smiled and shook her head.
"No, but thank you for asking." She turned back to the weeds. "Run along, then, dear. Do come back by the dinner time."
Her son smiled, sighed softly, and then turned to go. He couldn't get the ominous pattern of stars out of his mind.
