Gadget took a seat and directed her attention towards the shoes again, saying an absent-minded "Mm-hmm" in response to Moondancer's question as she did so.
After remaining silent for a moment more, she glanced up at the mare and finally focused on her. "Is something wrong?"

Moondancer smiled a bit at the filly's question. She had fetched the cookies and some soda while she was fiddling with the shoes, and set the tray onto the table now. The white unicorn was in some ways terribly excited about the fact that there was a young filly at her house, and in some ways she was beside herself with anxiety. Somewhere at the back of her mind she couldn't help thinking that the disappearance of her own foal had been her fault somehow. That somehow, she was a bad mother. She feared having foals around her for that very reason. What if she'd end up losing someone else's foal as well?
"No, not at all," she answered her, however, as she took a seat at the sofa herself. "I was merely wondering where your parents are. You seem awfully young to go about all alone."

The filly set the shoes down to take a cookie, and munched on it as she listened to Moondancer's response. With her mouth still somewhat full, she said, "Oh, well I don't really have much choice about that."
Taking a sip of soda, she continued, "I live alone." To Gadget, that obviously didn't seem like the type of thing that would concern an adult - in fact, she thought it simply made her seem more grown-up and independent.

Moondancer's eyes widened considerably.
"Alone?" she half exclaimed, quite aghast at the thought. "But... but you're so young! Oh, you poor dear! What has happened?"

Gadget had picked up another cookie, but paused with it halfway to her mouth upon hearing Moondancer's question. She just stared, looking somewhat shocked, and not quite wanting to answer. It had happened too recently.
"Um...well my Mom... She died when I was really little. I don't even really remember her. But my Daddy... My Daddy..." The filly looked at the floor determinedly. She didn't want to cry - she didn't like crying in front of other ponies. Finally she finished, "...My Daddy was really good at building stuff."

"Oh." Moondancer eyed the little filly for some while. She understood now. She was alone. More alone than Moondancer, perhaps, as the unicorn, at least, was an adult. She could take care of herself. Of course, this filly appeared to have learned already many things about living alone, but Moondancer could not believe that such a young one could survive all alone.
"I see," she then said, very gently, her voice understanding and calm. "You seem to be good at building stuff as well."
She tried to encourage the little one, to draw her mind away from sadness. Moondancer was trying to think what to do with the foal. She couldn't very well let her wander off all alone again. That was just not proper.

Gadget nodded and swallowed to try to keep any tears down. Taking another sip of soda, she looked back up slowly and gestured to the shoes. "These were Daddy's. I can't really get them to work, though. I'm not as good at it as Daddy was."
This particular invention had caused the accident, but the filly didn't really think of it that way. All she knew was that she had to finish what he had left incomplete - had to try to make him proud.

(con from picnic thread, I hope you don't mind. But SB needs character interaction, I can go somewhere else if need be)
Sugarberry's pace was rather casual and deliberately slow. There wasn't a point to hurry. It wasn't in her casual, go with the flow nature. She would reach her destination time enough, as long as she kept a blue iris following Moondancer's retreating form.
Moondancer had led the able chef to her home, though Sugarberry was lesuirely waiting to know on the mare's door. When she finally deemed it right, she knocked a gently round and waited patiently.

((I certainly don't mind, but I guess Crescent can give you the boot if she happens to. )) Gadget's ears pricked towards the door, and she eagerly jumped at the distraction. "I'll get it", she said quickly as she hopped off the couch and dashed to the door. She paused for a moment when she got there, wondering if Moondancer would want her to answer it, but tore it open before she had really come to a conclusion. The filly blinked up at the mare in front of her, realizing that she really didn't know what to say. "H-hello?", she said after a moment.

[[oh, she's very welcome to join in! ]] Moondancer was right in the process of trying to figure out what to say to Gadget about her father's shoes. She was looking at the shoes with confusion, trying to figure out what they were, for that matter, when the knock came from the door. She looked up, blinking with surprise as Gadget bounded to the door before she could say anything. She had to smile a little at her enthusiasm, however. It was good if she could be distracted of her bad thoughts, she was sure. The sight of Sugarberry behind the door surprised Moondancer quite a bit. She had not expected to meet any of the ponies she had met at the picnic again. She moistened her lips a little nervously as she walked to the door. What was this now? "Ahm, hello, Sugarberry," she said with a gentle voice as she stopped near the door. "Nice to see you... eh, again." She left the end of her sentence slightly questioning. She wasn't especially sad to see her, of course - she had got a rather positive image of the mare for the while they had met. And she was an excellent cook.

Sugarberry smiled down to Gadget with a calm, reserved smile.
"Oh my, perhaps I'm mistaken...or I'm beginning to have short term memory loss," she got side tracked a moment. "Is this Moondancer's?"
"Ahm, hello, Sugarberry. Nice to see you... eh, again."
Sugarberry reinforced her soft smile, pulling an aging hoof through graying locks.
"As well for you," she countered, "You left in a hurray, and I hadn't the chance to give you leftovers of lunch."
To that she pulled out a spare plate loaded up with the dishes she had prepared, covered by plastic wrap. It was, after all, a convenient excuse to make sure the other was all right. Regardless, Sugarberry was usually very over giving when it came to meals, there were always left overs for all to be had.
Kneeling down, she ruffled Gadget's hair up. "I'm sure there's enough here for you as well."
Curiously, she asked the Moondancer, "You sort of snuck off on us. Did you need to get back here to take care of this lovely lady?"

Moondancer smiled a bit, quite shyly, when Sugarberry inquired her about why she had left. She still felt the eerie sensation of something being horribly wrong, but she had managed to push it aside when Gadget came along distracting her. Now she tried to fight it to the background again.
"Oh, well, you see... I... I wasn't feeling so well. I haven't been much in company lately, maybe it was just that," he said, then realised she might not make any sense, so she decided to start over. "Oh, where are my manners? Sugarberry, this is Gadget. Gadget, this is Sugarberry, someone I met a little while ago." She looked at Sugarberry. "Gadget isn't... precisely mine. She stumbled in, we were just having some cookies and soda. Would you join us?" She motioned towards the table with her humble setting - humble when compared to what Sugarberry had had to offer at the picnic.

"Ah, I see, you were merely having a conversation with a passerby.," she looked down to Gadget, almost dotingly.
Having been a mother herself, Sugarberry somewhat missed the era when her own baby was that young. Though the aging mare wouldn't lie when admitting she wouldn't care to relive the years her daughter was a moody teenager.
"Would you join us?"
"Most certainly." If there was anything the TAF liked more than cooking, than it was without a doubt eating. Patiently she waited until the door was cleared before entering, and setting the food she had brought along on one of her counters before joining her.
Casually she picked up one of the cookies and took a healthy bite into it. For a moment, she left the crumbly bits on her tongue before chewing it up.
"Wonderful.," she encouraged, "Perhaps next time you should make them with Gadget."
That's right, Sugarberry was a proud supporter of cooking with children.
"So, what actually brought the two of you together?"

Gadget instantly decided she liked Sugarberry, flicking her tail to the side once when the mare ruffled her mane, in a reflex similar to that of a dog wagging its tail. She had been reminded again of her Daddy, but this time the memory made her happy. She didn't mind thinking about him - it was when she was reminded of why he was no longer there that bothered her.
The filly followed the two back to the table and looked back and forth between them as they talked. She was glad there was another grown-up to talk to Moondancer - she probably wouldn't have to explain living alone any more this way. Besides, she liked listening to older ponies talk. She didn't always understand them, but she did like building her vocabulary.
"So, what actually brought the two of you together?"
Gadget could no longer remain silent and explained guiltily, "I broke into Ms. Moondancer's house because I lost my screwdriver and I had to fix my flying shoes." Turning to beam at Moondancer, she added, "But instead of sending me to be chained up in the dungeon, she gave me cookies and soda!"

Moondancer smiled benignly to Gadget's explanation. She had already forgotten how adorable foals were! She felt only the slightest pang that she had never been able to see how her own daughter grew up like this. She didn't even know if Baby Moondancer was alive anymore. She swallowed and tried not to let the sad expression on her face. Instead, she concentrated on smiling to Gadget.
"Well, I don't think it was all that terrible, what you did," she said, and then realised that she might be encouraging unbecoming behaviour with those words, so she corrected herself: "Of course it wasn't right, but one should never be too harsh. Just next time do come knocking on the door, dear."
She smiled to Sugarberry, happy that she seemed to be enjoying her baking.
"Oh, I'm not nearly as good as you are," she said with a smile. "That picnic food was absolutely delicious - at least, it looked that way." She blushed a little. "I do apologise for leaving so abruptly. I am... not very used to company nowadays."
That was more than true. She had really spent far too long on her own.
