[[time setting: the morning the locket is stolen]]
Princess Rain fluttered down and landed at the top of the hill overlooking Dream Valley at one of the far corners of the vale. She wrinkled her nose a little at the familiar sight, not paying much attention to the yellow stallion landing next to her on the hill. His rainbow mane caught the glimmer of the sun as he tossed his head a little. Rain flicked an ear towards him, but her attention remained in the valley below. She didn't really feel like going back home yet, but she supposed her mother was already worried sick, and she had had her fun, after all. It was only fair to return home now.
"It is a long time," said the quiet voice of the stallion standing next to her. She blinked and looked at him, as though only now really noticing him. Rain was slightly displeased to notice the serious look on Skydancer's face. That would not do. Her eye had fell on him exactly because he was so much fun to be with. His sense of humour and the way he made her always feel better - she didn't want to see him gloomy. That wouldn't do at all. And it most certainly didn't please the little Princess.
"Yes," she said with a shrug. "But I doubt many things have changed." She smiled to him, her young eyes wearing that certain expression with which fillies tend to look at their prospective husbands.
This prospective husband had no idea of being one. He had promised to bring the princess back home safely, and that was what he was about to do. He didn't answer anything to her, instead he turned to look at her with a kind smile.
"Shall we?" he asked and spread his wings.
The little princess smiled widely.
"Certainly," she said, inclined her head like only royalty knows how, and then leaped up onto her wings, to start flying towards the castle in the distance.
Skydancer smiled and pushed himself off the ground, to follow the little flutter. He, for his part, was actually eager to see his old home. He wanted to greet his parents, and show them how he had grown. A respectable stallion, in the end. A winning smile crept across his face as he continued flying towards the Dream Castle. He had never before met the Queen. That should be interesting.
