As the sun neared the horizon, a pink pegasus and a yellow stallion approached a cozy cottage at the far edge of the neighborhood.
"Here we are, Sky," Firefly smiled, glancing back to him before opening the door to her cozy home.
Inside was a warm, yet slightly empty-feeling space. It was a small cottage, with a loft that functioned as the mare's bedroom. The walls in the main room were adorned with ribbons and trophies, symbols of success in her airborne racing and acrobatics career, as well as medals of honor and bravery.
Firefly shivered again, still chilly from being wet in the evening air. "Go ahead in, I'm going to get us some towels."

Skydancer nodded as he walked in, looking round the place with a smile. It felt nice there. Like a home, even if it somehow seemed to him like there was something missing from there. He supposed it was just him being used to seeing signs of family life in any home. His own had certainly been full of it. He grew a little sad as he thought about it. He didn't really even have a place to stay anymore. His parents were gone, and he felt reluctant to go to the castle to ask for shelter from Rain. His brother would be there. He didn't want to meet Starshine again until he felt ready.
Skydancer started to walk around the room to look at the trophies and the rest, to get his mind off of unwanted business. He smiled as he read on the labels. Firefly certainly was everything her reputation let on. He flapped his wings about a little, to dry them off while waiting for Firefly to come with the towels.

"Here we go," Firefly soon returned with two large towels. Taking the edge of one in her mouth, she swung her head in an arc so the towel draped over Skydancer's head uncerimoniously. She chuckled and wrapped herself up in the towel she had gotten for herself.
The pegasus walked over to the soft couch and curled up on one side of it, nuzzling her face against the plushy fabric of the towel.
"Come, sit," She said with a smile. "Welcome to my.. humble abode."

Skydancer laughed when she threw the towel over his face. He shook his head to make it slide off and then caught it with a hoof. He folded his wings and tossed the towel over them, wrapping himself into it. He regarded Firefly on the couch, thinking how very cute she was there. Then he, too, got onto the couch, to the other side of it as not to intrude, and sighed, pleased.
"Mmm," he said. "This is the best welcome of the day so far."

"This is the best welcome of the day so far."
"It's probably nothing compared to your own home, though," The pink pegasus said, eyes drifting around the room. "There's nothing quite like your place, in comparison to someone else's. Ya know?"
Firefly's stomach rumbled loudly. She laughed, not one to be embaressed by bodily sounds, "I believe my gut is trying to tell us something."
The pegasus stood, leaving the towel where she had been. "You're in luck, yellow belly," Firefly started, always one proned to nicknames. Even though 'yellow belly' was synonomous to 'scaredy cat', Skydancer wouldn't be able to argue that his belly literally WAS yellow. "I have everything I need to make one of my specialties!"
The mare grinned and sauntered into the kitchen. From the small kitchen area, she called over her shoulder, "Can I get you a drink?"

"It's probably nothing compared to your own home, though," The pink pegasus said, eyes drifting around the room. "There's nothing quite like your place, in comparison to someone else's. Ya know?"
This had to pull Skydancer's face serious and he turned his eyes down to the floor. The memory of Starshine's angry eyes stung him, and the sight of his parents' old house made him swallow. For him, there was no such thing as his place anymore. When Firefly, true to her fiery temper, shifted from that point to the eating-related issues, Skydancer looked up with a faint smile, watching her go to the kitchen. He couldn't quite recover from the shocked state Firefly's words had got him into, and thus he made no reply to the nickname "yellow belly". Suddenly, he wasn't so much in the mood for jokes.
"Can I get you a drink?"
"Uhh... sure," he said with a voice he couldn't quite correct to light, though not for want of trying. He swallowed and cleared his throat, trying to get his head straight, but he didn't dare to speak any more, so as not to reveal himself further.

It didn't take Firefly long to pick up on Skydancer's sudden change in demeanor. The pegasus continued into the kitchen, taking her time while preparing drinks for herself and Skydancer. While she was at it, she also began to combine ingredients for their meal. Firefly didn't rush so as to give Skydancer a moment alone to gather himself, and to keep the atmosphere relaxed.
A few minutes later, the pegasus returned with two large mugs full of warm, sweet, berry-flavored tea made with berries she had gathered previously. It was her favorite drink, one that always helped to calm her nerves and warm her from the inside out.
"Here, try this.." She said, setting the cup before the stallion. Firefly eased into the sofa next to him, and nuzzled his cheek briefly. "You know, I'm a mare of my word.. my promises," She sighed, relaxing into the soft cushions, "Are as sure as my double inside-out loop." Firefly glanced at the fellow peg with a small but kind smile. "Just so you know. In case you ever wanted to talk."

Skydancer remained quiet as Firefly went about in the kitchen. His mind was lost somewhere far away - into a time he hardly recalled anymore. They had both been colts, his brother and him. Starshine had been getting him out of the trouble he put himself into after his practical jokes and other tomfoolery. They had always been close. Then Skydancer had left. He had always imagined nothing would change. But now he found that everything had.
When Firefly returned with the warm mugs of tea, he looked up. His eyes remained on the mug as she settled on the sofa, and one turned ear was the only sure sign that Skydancer was listening to her. After she finished, he whisked that ear around a bit and then reached out for the mug. He corrected himself more upright on the sofa and took the mug in between his hooves. Still in silence, he tasted a drop, then smiled as the warmth spread into him. She sure knew how to make tea.
"It is just that... I don't really have a home," he said with a shrug that attempted for non-chalant. "Not anymore."

"I'm sorry," Firefly said, lavendar eyes sincerely expressing her sympathy. "You're welcome to.. to stay the night here, if you'd like to." She was quiet a few minutes, thinking inwardly. Eventually she spoke again, "No funny business, aside the usual that is, and maybe we'll talk more later." She offered a smile, not the best pony on comfort. She took that moment to head back to the kitchen for their meal.

Skydancer smiled to her at her offer. He didn't feel comfortable in emotional situations either - which was undoubtedly one of the reasons he had left his brother earlier in the castle. He watched her head for the kitchen, a warm expression in his eyes.
"Thank you, Firefly," he said, genuine emotion in his voice. Then his tone became more playful again. "Though I must assure you that business with me is ever hardly funny or usual." He chuckled and sniffed the air. "What's for dinner?"

"Thank you, Firefly,"
She called back from the kitchen, "I'm not making promises just yet, Sky," A few things clunked around, "But you've got a chance if you want it."
Part of Firefly had always been charitable, wanting to reach out to others. Her heroic deeds of the past weren't for show--they were done from the heart. It wouldn't be the first time she had offered a pony who was down on their luck a place to stay for while. Truth be told, she was eager for the company. Where HAD Medley gotten to nowadays, anyway?
"Though I must assure you that business with me is ever hardly funny or usual."
"Mm hmm.." Firefly smirked, "I'll believe it when I see it."
"What's for dinner?"
Just as he asked, Firefly returned with two heaping plates of salad. But not just any salad, as these were full of different kinds of vegetables, berries, a few sweet-tasting kinds of nuts, and even some cheese as well. Even a glance at the concoction couldn't tell what ingredients it held. A small bread roll adorned each plate.
"'Bit of everything' salad...thing," Firefly grinned, having never decided on what to call her masterpiece. She returned to the kitchen for utensils and some dressings.

Skydancer licked his lips when Firefly returned with the salad. His tail wagged about and he grinned. He had eaten all kinds of things on his trips - meat included, though he hadn't especially enjoyed it - but nothing could ever taste better than a heaping plateful of a little bit of everything. He smiled and extended a hoof to take his plate.
"Mmm," he said, smiling. "It looks delicious." He winked to her. "Nearly as delicious as you."
He was getting back his flirting self. He wasn't comfortable feeling bad or uncomfortable for long.

"Nearly as delicious as you."
Firefly pursed her lips slightly and glanced sideways at Skydancer. For once, she found herself without a witty response. It was easily disguised though, as she hungrily partook of her dinner.
The pink pegasus, a tomboy at heart, was never shy about food. With her metabolism as it was, she was a hearty eater. It wasn't long before most of her salad and bread had disappeared.
"I'm glad you like it," She smiled at last.

Skydancer smiled as she dug her face into the salad. He started eating with equal passion, and as he began, he noticed how hungry he really was. His dinner was just as quickly eaten, and there was a few salad leaves draped about his lips when he lifted his head to smile back to her again.
In a moment of light-heartedness he picked up the rest of the salad leaves still on the plate and stuck them on his nose and wrinkled his muzzle so that the leaves remained there held by his upper lip right below the nostrils. He looked like he had salad moustache and beard, with the leaves sticking out of his mouth all round, and he attempted for a gentleman's pose, complete with the slightly wrinkled forehead and squinted eyes.
"I am Sir Salad," he said, just slightly less dignified because of his attempt to keep the salad leaves in place while talking.

Firefly giggled and shook her head at Skydancer's antics, putting her plate down at the same time. His silliness and his similarity to Firefly herself was so refreshing! Not many stallions could keep her attention for long.
Leaning forward with half-closed eyes, Firefly's eyes sparked mischeviously. "Well, Sir Salad," Her voice grew quieter, "You seem delicious as well." The pegasus leaned forward and delicately pulled a lettuce leaf from the stallion's muzzle, then pulled it into her mouth.
"Mm hmm," She chuckled lightly, "Quite so."
