Just as Firefly opened the door, Medley had figured out the proper answer.
"And your idea of fun is to jump into bed with every mare you meet?" he asked Skydancer, challenge in his voice - not coming to think that the comment might affect Firefly as well.
Skydancer lifted his head higher.
"Well, now, Mr Goody-two-shoes, what's the harm in a little fun when you're feeling like it, anyway? I bet you haven't had a mare in years, with that strung-up attitude of yours."
Medley's nostrils dilated in a way that was a clear signal that he was getting very worked up now.
There was very clearly an open battle brewing.

"And your idea of fun is to jump into bed with every mare you meet?"
Firefly now rejoined the stallions, at least looking a bit more together. Medley's statement struck a nerve, and the pegasus, now standing between them, narrowed her eyes just the slightest bit at Skydancer. She asked quietly, "Is that true, Sky? Is that really what you're after, then.. fun?" She didn't look angry, more disappointed. But then again she kept most of her emotions buried under the surface.
"Calm down, Ponyfeathers.. "

Skydancer realised he had made a slight mistake there. He hadn't meant it quite the way it must have sounded to Firefly, but he feared she wouldn't believe him if he tried explaining. He still had to.
"Oh... no, that's not what I meant, Firefly," he said, folding his wings very close to his body and lowering his head submissively.
Medley was feeling rather triumphant now. He smiled back to Skydancer, just a tad of an edge to his smile.
"Oh?" he asked with a chuckle. "Then what did you mean?"
Skydancer looked at Medley with an angry frown. He had never been especially good with controlling his emotions.
"And what are you, her father?" he asked back. "I don't think I'm answerable to you in any way."
Medley was a bit taken back by that. Yes, he was right. Medley had nothing to say here.

"Guys, please.." Firefly shut her eyes hard, feeling a headache coming on. "Don't fight. Just.. don't fight."
The pegasus rubbed her temple against an extended foreleg, trying her best to think. She was getting tired. Something had to be done tonight.
"Medley.." Firefly walked over to her friend and nuzzled his face affectionately. She did love him deeply, in a friendship kind of way. She spoke gently, like she didn't speak to any other stallion, even Skydancer, "You've just come home, I imagine.. Go home and get some rest, ok? I'll meet up with you in the morning, I promise. I'm glad you're home safe, Ponyfeathers."

Medley was instantly worried and shut his mouth when Firefly pleaded for them to stop fighting. Skydancer felt himself quite downcast, and was afraid she would toss him out after all.
Medley pulled his ears backwards while listening to her, and nodded finally. He didn't like what she was saying - he would have wanted to tell her to tell Skydancer to go, and stay with her himself, to talk, but he wouldn't intrude.
"All right," he said and nuzzled her on the forehead briefly. "I'm... sorry about all this." He blushed faintly. "I... I thought you were in trouble in here."
Skydancer watched the two of them with some amount of suspicion. He didn't like what he saw. He was interested in Firefly, and he was not about to quit her over to Medley. But he was realising now that he just might have serious competitor in the aqua green pegasus.

((hmm.. I rather like the idea of him staying..))
"I'm... sorry about all this." He blushed faintly. "I... I thought you were in trouble in here."
Firefly simply couldn't turn Medley out after he expressed such concern over her. She cared too much about him to offer her allegiance to any other stallion. However, Firefly also wasn't a mare to express her emotions very openly. At least not to Skydancer.
She kept her voice even and firm, aided by the fact that she was tired, "No, don't go, Ponyfeathers," The peg sighed, "Skydancer.. I'll make up the couch for you downstairs. Medley and I have a lot to catch up on." Firefly didn't make eye contact with either, and then silently took the extra pillow and blanket and climbed down from the loft.
The peg sighed with relief that she had a moment's peace. Though she didn't let herself really acknowledge that, for she didn't wish to make herself feel old. Firefly efficiently prepared a comfortable bed for Skydancer to sleep on, yawning as she stepped away from the couch.

[[^-^ I like it too]]
Medley's face lit up when Firefly asked him to stay after all. He smiled to her, and threw a sly look at Skydancer. Skydancer, for his part, was far less pleased. He didn't start arguing, however. When Firefly went downstairs, Skydancer looked at Medley. He stepped forward and looked at the green pegasus squarely in the eyes.
"You seem to be good... friends," he said under his breath, so quietly that Firefly could not hear him, his eyes fixed on Medley's. "But I can see that is all you are."
Medley swallowed and met Skydancer's eyes just as squarely, even though his words did wound him a little. Being more on the softer side than Skydancer could ever be, he averted his eyes first. And he said nothing. Skydancer eyed him a while longer, and then walked to the edge of the loft, a slight smile on his face. He was beginning to see the pattern. And he was convinced it would work into his favour.
Skydancer went down from the loft and stood right behind Firefly when she stepped back. He bent his neck and ran his muzzle along her spine from the root of her tail to the nape of her neck, and then up along her neck under her hair, until he was at her cheek, and there he kissed her gently. His eyes had a soft expression in them as he met her eyes. There were no words there, only meanings of caring and understanding. Skydancer would not be upset for being denied the bed tonight, and he would wait. He was more serious this time with Firefly than he had ever before been with any mare.
Up on the loft, Medley stood at the edge of the loft by the ladder, looking at the two of them. His heart felt like it was tying up into a knot inside his chest.

The pink pegasus physically shivered at the stallion's touch. Inwardly, she scolded herself for giving him the satisfaction of knowing just how he affected her. It was as if something within him created a spark upon contact, sending shock waves through her body. But it wouldn't be like Firefly to be easy to get.
As he looked at her, Firefly's lavendar eyes met his without intimidation or hesitation. It was a look of intensity, and also of independence and dominance, in a way. Her elegant head leaned forward, stopping a moment to smirk. Her lips then closed over Skydancer's in a parting, good-night kiss that he wouldn't easily forget.
"Sleep tight, Skydancer."
Firefly then walked back toward the ladder, and climbed back up to the loft bedroom. Once she was in his presence again, the pegasus gave Medley a meaningful, honest hug, and smiled warmly. Her voice, although tired, was still content.
"I missed you!" She laughed softly, making sure to keep her tones low. "How was your trip?" She asked, then turned to pull the sheets and blankets back into place.

The shiver of her fur under his muzzle was not left unnoticed by the yellow pegasus stallion, and he smiled a bit slyly to her. He knew he was making an impression, even if he also knew it was going to be a chase. It became all the more obvious with her teasing kiss on his lips, accompanied with the smirk.
"Sleep tight, Skydancer."
Skydancer heard the voice, but only saw her retreating navy blue tail as she returned to the loft by the time he opened his eyes. His lips curved to a smile as he watched her go, enjoying every movement of her hips and her strong muscles as she worked her way up the ladder.
"Good night, my lightning bolt," he murmured under his breath, then looked up at Medley, meeting his gaze with a wink. Then he turned back to the couch and started to make himself comfortable for the night. It was not like him to eavesdrop on personal discussions, and he was tired.
Up on the loft, Medley wrinkled his nose at the kiss and managed to wipe away the sad expression only barely in time before Firefly turned and returned to the loft. His eye didn't leave the yellow pegasus before she was completely up the ladder, however. Medley didn't know how he felt. It was unfair. He had just begun to imagine how he would tell her of his feelings... and now he sauntered along with his stupid golden fur and rainbow mane and Rainbow knows what other charms, and what could Medley do?
Medley can be the friend he always was, he told himself bitterly as he forced up a smile to meet Firefly, his mind echoing back the words Skydancer had thrown at him earlier. That is all you are. Friends.
the pegasus gave Medley a meaningful, honest hug, and smiled warmly. Her voice, although tired, was still content.
"I missed you!" She laughed softly, making sure to keep her tones low.
This forced a true smile on Medley's lips, and he answered the hug, for a moment forgetting just how much he might have wanted to hold her there longer. Skydancer went clear out of his mind at her voice, the voice he had so much missed.
"How was your trip?" She asked, then turned to pull the sheets and blankets back into place.
Medley circled round the bed to the other side, helping her with the sheets and blankets, managing not to think what might have been going on in them before he came by recalling his trip to his daughter's mother.
"Oh, well..." He shrugged, a bit uncomfortable with talking about the other mare. He, too, was keeping his voice low, more so as not to be heard by Skydancer than not to disturb him. "It was... tiresome. I don't go see her enough. Medley's mother, you know. And when I do, she wouldn't let me leave for everything she wants to tell me." He grimaced. "Not that all of it is pleasant."

This forced a true smile on Medley's lips, and he answered the hug, for a moment forgetting just how much he might have wanted to hold her there longer.
"There's that smile," The pegasus said tiredly, relieved to see Medley act a bit more in character. Or at least, how she knew him.
"It was... tiresome. I don't go see her enough. Medley's mother, you know. And when I do, she wouldn't let me leave for everything she wants to tell me." He grimaced.
"Mm," Firefly responded softly, nodding a bit as she climbed into bed. She patted a pink hoof to the place next to her, signaling Medley to join her at her side.
"Not that all of it is pleasant."
"I know, Ponyfeathers," she said softly, with an understanding tone. As he joined her, she curled up against him, feeling the most comfortable and safe than she had in all the time he had been away. Medley was always a comfort, always a shoulder to cry on, and Firefly valued that fact more even the biggest double inside-out loop.
The pegasus rested her head on Medley's chest and smiled into the darkness, "I'm so glad you're home."

Medley smiled as he watched her climb on the bed and signal him to join her. He felt very much in the right place as he climbed there with her, and had her cradling into his arms right the next moment. He had to swallow as he wrapped his hooves about her. All thoughts of what might have been flashed through his mind, but eventually settled quietly onto the what was. What was true at that moment. What was theirs at that moment.
He closed his eyes and rested his head on hers, feeling content there. He was warmed by her words, warmed beyond measure, and he caressed her just a little with one hoof, for comfort more than any suggestion. That was not something Medley would have done, ever.
"I'm glad to be home," he said softly.
For a while there was a comfortable silence, then Medley smirked just a little.
"And to what trouble have you got yourself into while I've been away?" His tone was lighter now. "For instance, what is a yellow pegasus doing in your cottage all of a sudden? I've never seen him before."

"And to what trouble have you got yourself into while I've been away?"
The pink pegasus's eyes shot open, and she froze a second. More or less used to the idea of having her mischief caught in progress by Medley in the past, Firefly simply buried her face against his chest to hide a smile.
"For instance, what is a yellow pegasus doing in your cottage all of a sudden? I've never seen him before."
"He's.. he's a.. um.." Firefly hesitated. What was the stallion to her? A friend? More? "..Skydancer. His name is.. Skydancer." She finished, nodding once. Her tone became more relaxed as she continued, "I was picnicing with Munchy and Sweetberry, and he kind of showed up. He was.. very charming," Her voiced grew quieter, and she shut her eyes as she relaxed into Medley's hold, "We raced, and tied. No one's tied me in a long time.. we went.. to the waterfall," The pegasus yawned, very lulled by the stallion's warmth.
"..and he kissed me.."

Medley listened quietly. First, he was smiling, but towards the end his smile faded a little, though he didn't allow her to see it. It all sounded... romantic. His heart sank as she talked about his flying skills. Skydancer was a reckless one, like herself. Very much like herself, he suspected, in many ways. How could he ever compete with someone like that?
But on the outside, he didn't let his sadness show.
"I see," he said gently. "And why is he here now?"
He didn't realise at all that she might have been drifting off into sleep.

"And why is he here now?"
Firefly was barely conscious, and answered with quiet murmurs, "He needed.. a place to stay. And we were.. having fun. He thinks he.. might love.. me."

Medley felt cold shivers run through his spine as she spoke. "Love" was not a word she had wanted to hear. He put his muzzle deeper into her hair.
"And... do you think... you might... love him?" he asked, very quietly, afraid to hear the answer.
He still didn't realise she was falling asleep.
